MINIX ER937-AI

Windows 11 sleep, hibernation, and Wake-on-LAN

Goal and current status

The PC's fans keep running during sleep. The desired behavior is:

  • Automatically sleep after inactivity, then enter hibernation (German: Ruhezustand) so the fans stop.
  • Preserve open applications and the working session.
  • Keep the configuration through restarts and shutdowns.
  • Make Win+L lock the PC and trigger hibernation.
  • Disable Wake-on-LAN.

Confirmed: Windows reports Modern Standby (S0 low-power idle), connected networking, and hibernation support. The active Balanced plan now contains a 15-minute AC sleep timeout and a 60-second AC hibernation timeout.

Not yet confirmed: Successful automatic sleep-to-hibernate transition, fan shutdown during hibernation, Wake-on-LAN changes, or creation/testing of the lock-triggered task. No successful behavior test was reported in this chat.

1. Disable Wake-on-LAN

Open Device Manager → Network adapters → Ethernet adapter → Properties → Advanced.

Adapter settingRequested valueMeaning
Wake on pattern matchDisabledPrevents waking in response to matching network traffic.
WOL & Shutdown Link SpeedLeave at current/default valueControls Ethernet link speed in the shutdown/WoL context; it is not the WoL enable/disable switch.
Wake on magic packetDisabledPrevents waking in response to a WoL magic packet.
Shutdown Wake-On-LanDisabledDisables the adapter's network wake feature after shutdown.

Under Power Management, if available:

  • Uncheck Allow this device to wake the computer.
  • Leave Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power unchanged.
  • Click OK.

If BIOS/UEFI offers Wake on LAN, disable it for an additional firmware-level block.

Some Modern Standby systems do not expose the Power Management options. Network wake settings alone do not establish the cause of fans continuing to run.

Model-specific caveat: Intel documents certain NUC systems where disabling Wake on Pattern Match prevents entry into Modern Standby. That is not evidence that the MINIX has the same problem, but it means this setting should be revisited if sleep becomes worse after changing it.

2. Diagnose the fan problem

The reported symptom was fans keep running during sleep, rather than random wakeups, high power consumption alone, or power-on after shutdown.

Fans remaining active can indicate that background activity, a driver, or a peripheral is preventing a deeper low-power state. The chat did not establish the root cause on this MINIX.

Check supported sleep states

Run:

powercfg /a

Reported output:

Standby (S0 Niedriger Energiestand – Leerlauf) Netzwerk verbunden
Ruhezustand

Interpretation:

  • Sleep uses Modern Standby (S0) with networking connected.
  • Traditional S3 sleep is unavailable in the current firmware configuration.
  • Hibernation is available.
  • Hybrid sleep is unavailable.
  • Fast startup is disabled by current policy.
  • The hypervisor message concerns hybrid sleep; it does not establish that disabling the hypervisor would make S3 available.

Check active power requests

Run:

powercfg /requests

Reported output:

DISPLAY:
Keine.

SYSTEM:
Keine.

AWAYMODE:
Keine.

AUSFÜHRUNG:
Keine.

PERFBOOST:
Keine.

ACTIVELOCKSCREEN:
Keine.

No application or driver was reporting a power request at that moment. This does not rule out activity during sleep.

Peripheral isolation test proposed

  1. Disconnect Ethernet and nonessential USB devices.
  2. Choose Start → Power → Sleep.
  3. Leave the PC untouched for five minutes.
  4. Check whether the fans stop.

No result was reported.

SleepStudy diagnostic proposed

  1. Put the PC to sleep and leave it untouched for at least 15 minutes, even if the fans continue.
  2. Wake it.
  3. Open Command Prompt as administrator and run:
powercfg /sleepstudy /output "%USERPROFILE%\Desktop\sleepstudy.html"
  1. Open the HTML report.
  2. Inspect the latest session's low-power-state percentage, Top offenders, and transition details.

Microsoft recommends sessions longer than ten minutes for this analysis. If the desktop is redirected or the output path does not exist, use another existing writable folder.

No report was produced or reviewed in the chat.

3. Configure automatic sleep followed by hibernation

The user chose to configure automatic hibernation rather than continue investigating sleep fan activity first.

Initial commands proposed

Run in Terminal or Command Prompt as administrator:

powercfg /hibernate on
powercfg /change standby-timeout-ac 15
powercfg /change hibernate-timeout-ac 1

The /change timeout values are minutes.

A subsequent query still showed a 30-minute sleep timeout and a zero hibernation timeout. The chat did not establish why those settings had not appeared in the active plan.

Explicit commands that produced verified settings

Run separately in Terminal as administrator:

powercfg /setacvalueindex SCHEME_CURRENT SUB_SLEEP STANDBYIDLE 900
powercfg /setacvalueindex SCHEME_CURRENT SUB_SLEEP HIBERNATEIDLE 60
powercfg /setactive SCHEME_CURRENT

The /setacvalueindex values for these two settings are seconds.

Command settingValuePurpose
STANDBYIDLE900 secondsAutomatic sleep after 15 minutes of inactivity while plugged in.
HIBERNATEIDLE60 secondsConfigure a fixed sleep-to-hibernation timeout of 1 minute.
SCHEME_CURRENT activation—Apply the current power plan.

Timing caveat: This is the intended configuration, not a confirmed guarantee that hibernation will occur exactly 16 minutes after the last input. Modern Standby, Windows activity, policy, and firmware can affect the transition. Test actual behavior.

Microsoft documents fixed doze-to-hibernate timers for Modern Standby, although its general guidance favors adaptive hibernation. Adaptive battery-drain triggers apply to battery operation and do not solve this plugged-in desktop use case by themselves.

Verify the active plan

powercfg /query SCHEME_CURRENT SUB_SLEEP

Active plan:

GUID des Energieschemas: 381b4222-f694-41f0-9685-ff5bb260df2e (Ausbalanciert)
GUID-Alias: SCHEME_BALANCED
GUID der Untergruppe: 238c9fa8-0aad-41ed-83f4-97be242c8f20 (Energie sparen)
GUID-Alias: SUB_SLEEP

Recorded values before and after configuration:

SettingInitial AC valueVerified final AC valueBattery/DC value, unchanged
STANDBYIDLE — Deaktivierung nach0x00000708 = 1,800 s / 30 min0x00000384 = 900 s / 15 min0x000000b4 = 180 s / 3 min
HYBRIDSLEEP — Hybriden Standbymodus zulassen0x00000001 = On0x00000001 = On0x00000001 = On
HIBERNATEIDLE — Ruhezustand nach0x00000000 = no fixed timer / adaptive behavior0x0000003c = 60 s / 1 min0x7fffffff = 2,147,483,647 s, effectively an extremely long timeout
RTCWAKE — Zeitgeber zur Aktivierung zulassen0x00000000 = Disabled0x00000000 = Disabled0x00000000 = Disabled

German labels:

  • Wechselstromeinstellung = AC / plugged-in setting.
  • Gleichstromeinstellung = DC / battery setting.
  • Sekunden = seconds.
  • Ausbalanciert = Balanced.
  • Ruhezustand = hibernation.
  • Standby / Energie sparen = sleep.

The HYBRIDSLEEP plan setting being On does not mean hybrid sleep is supported: powercfg /a explicitly reported it unavailable.

Behavior test still required

  1. Keep the PC plugged in with the Balanced plan active.
  2. Leave it untouched for about 20 minutes.
  3. Check whether the fans stop and the PC enters hibernation.
  4. Press the power button to resume.
  5. Confirm that open applications return.

If it remains active, recheck the plan values and generate a SleepStudy report. Do not treat successful configuration as proof of successful hibernation.

4. Persistence after restarting

These power-plan settings persist through full restarts and shutdowns.

They apply to the configured Balanced / Ausbalanciert plan while plugged in. They may change if the plan is reset, another plan is selected, or software or policy overrides them.

The AC commands above did not change the battery/DC settings.

5. Manual hibernation and power-button option

Hibernation saves the session to disk and powers the system down. The fans should stop once the transition completes. It resumes more slowly than sleep but restores the working session.

To expose Hibernate in the power menu:

Systemsteuerung → Energieoptionen → Auswählen, was beim Drücken von Netzschaltern geschehen soll → Einige Einstellungen sind momentan nicht verfügbar → Ruhezustand → Änderungen speichern

Then use Start → Power → Ruhezustand.

The same Power Options page can assign Ruhezustand to the physical power button.

Manual command:

shutdown.exe /h

The /h argument requests hibernation when it is enabled. It does not perform an ordinary shutdown or sign out. No forced-close argument is needed.

6. Make Win+L trigger hibernation

By default, Win+L locks Windows and keeps the session running. The idle power settings can still apply afterward; locking by itself does not immediately request hibernation.

The proposed solution is a scheduled task triggered by locking the workstation.

Task Scheduler configuration

  1. Open Aufgabenplanung.
  2. Select Aufgabe erstellen….
  3. Name the task Hibernate on lock.
  4. Under Allgemein:
    • Select the intended user account.
  5. Under Trigger → Neu…:
    • Aufgabe starten: Bei Arbeitsstationssperre.
    • Choose Bestimmter Benutzer and the intended account.
    • Keep the trigger enabled.
  6. Under Aktionen → Neu…:
    • Aktion: Programm starten.
    • Programm/Skript: C:\Windows\System32\shutdown.exe.
    • Argumente hinzufügen: /h.
  7. Under Bedingungen:
  8. Save with OK.

Expected behavior and scope

  • Pressing Win+L locks the session.
  • The lock event starts shutdown.exe /h.
  • The PC should enter hibernation and the fans should stop.
  • Resume using the power button.
  • This trigger responds to any workstation lock for that account, including automatic locking, not only the Win+L keyboard shortcut.
  • Existing idle sleep settings remain configured.

Status: Instructions were provided; the user did not report creating or testing this task.

Test and undo

Test by pressing Win+L, then check for hibernation and successful resume.

To stop hibernating on lock, open Aufgabenplanung, locate Hibernate on lock, and disable or delete that task. This leaves the power-plan timeouts intact.

7. Completion checklist

  • Identify the supported sleep model: connected Modern Standby S0.
  • Confirm hibernation support.
  • Check current power requests: none reported.
  • Confirm AC automatic sleep timeout: 900 seconds.
  • Confirm AC hibernation timeout: 60 seconds.
  • Confirm Wake-on-LAN settings were changed.
  • Test automatic sleep and subsequent hibernation.
  • Confirm fans stop during hibernation.
  • Confirm applications return after resume.
  • Create the lock-triggered hibernation task.
  • Test Win+L and resume.
  • Generate SleepStudy if the automatic transition fails.
